What a weekly gardener does for a Santa Clarita yard
A weekly gardener keeps the entire landscape in shape on one schedule, not just the grass. In the Santa Clarita Valley that matters more than in most of Los Angeles: summer afternoons regularly pass 100°F, many yards sit on compacted clay, and slopes and drip zones need regular attention to keep plants alive. A mow-and-go service handles the lawn. A gardener catches the dry zone, the weed flush and the overgrown shrub before they become a weekend project or an HOA letter.
Our gardener service starts with the weekly basics of lawn mowing, trimming, edging and blow-off. Then it adds the work that keeps the rest of the yard looking cared for:
- Beds and gravel: weeds pulled or spot-treated before they seed.
- Shrubs and hedges: light shaping between seasonal hedge and shrub trims.
- Irrigation: a monthly zone walk-through with small fixes on the spot.
- Cleanup: leaves, palm fronds and wind debris hauled off.
How we split the work across the month
Every part of the yard gets attention every month, without paying for everything every week. Lawn, edges and hardscape are done on every visit. Beds, shrubs and irrigation rotate through the month, so a typical schedule looks like this:
| Week | Every visit | Rotating focus |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Mow, trim, edge, blow-off | Bed weeding, front yard |
| 2 | Mow, trim, edge, blow-off | Shrub and hedge touch-ups |
| 3 | Mow, trim, edge, blow-off | Bed weeding, backyard and side yards |
| 4 | Mow, trim, edge, blow-off | Sprinkler zone walk-through |
During fast spring growth and after Santa Ana wind events, the rotation shifts toward whatever the yard needs most that week.
Built for SCV heat, clay and slopes
Santa Clarita yards fail in predictable ways, and a good gardener plans around them.
Watering that matches the season
Most brown spots in August come from coverage, not effort. During the monthly walk-through we look for clogged nozzles, tilted heads and zones that run onto the sidewalk. Anything bigger than a quick adjustment goes to our sprinkler repair crew with a photo and a flat price first.
Mowing height that protects the lawn
Tall fescue, the most common SCV lawn, needs to stay tall in summer. We raise the deck as the heat arrives and lower it again in fall. Bermuda and St. Augustine get their own settings.
Slopes and parkways
Hillside tract homes in Saugus, Canyon Country and Stevenson Ranch often have planted slopes and parkway strips that are easy to forget. We include them in the rotation so weeds and dead growth do not build up where neighbors and HOA inspectors see them first.
Gardener service vs. separate one-off jobs
A weekly gardener is usually the better value once a yard has beds, shrubs and irrigation to look after. One-off services still have their place:
- Just need the grass cut? Choose lawn mowing on its own.
- Yard got away from you? Start with a one-time yard cleanup, then move to weekly service so it stays done.
- Ready to use less water? Ask about a drought-tolerant landscaping conversion for part of the yard.
