Why SCV lawns need core aeration
Santa Clarita lawns need core aeration because so many of them sit on heavy clay that was compacted during tract grading. Compacted clay sheds water instead of absorbing it, starves roots of oxygen and keeps roots shallow. Shallow roots are exactly what you do not want heading into a 100-degree August.
You can usually see the signs. Water puddles or runs onto the sidewalk within a few minutes of the sprinklers starting. A screwdriver will not push more than an inch or two into the soil. The lawn looks thin and tired even though it gets plenty of water. Core aeration addresses all three.
Core aeration vs spike aeration
Core aeration pulls plugs of soil out of the lawn, while spike aeration just pokes holes. On clay, that difference is everything.
| Core aeration | Spike aeration | |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | Hollow tines remove plugs of soil | Solid spikes push soil aside |
| Effect on compaction | Relieves it by removing soil | Can add compaction around each hole |
| Water and air movement | Opens channels that stay open for weeks | Holes often close back up quickly |
| Seed contact when overseeding | Seed drops into open holes | Limited improvement |
We only do core aeration. Spike shoes and spike rollers are inexpensive, but on SCV clay they mostly press the soil tighter.
What happens to the cores
The cores stay on the lawn and break down. Within a week or two of mowing and watering, they crumble back into the turf and act as a light top-dressing. The holes they leave behind fill with water, air and, if you overseed, new grass seed.
Overseeding: rebuilding a thin fescue lawn
Overseeding spreads new grass seed into an existing lawn to fill in thin and bare areas. For tall fescue, it is the most effective way to recover from summer, when heat, disease and foot traffic thin the turf out.
Fescue is a bunch-type grass. It does not spread sideways the way Bermuda does, so a bare spot in fescue does not heal on its own. Each fall, a lawn either gets new seed or it gets a little thinner, and thin fescue is an open door for crabgrass, spurge and creeping Bermuda. Overseeding right after aeration gives the seed the best possible contact with the soil, because a good share of it lands in the open holes.
If more than about half the lawn is bare, or it is mostly weeds, overseeding is usually not enough. In that case sod installation is the faster, more reliable fix.
When to aerate in Santa Clarita
Aerate tall fescue from mid-September through October and warm-season grasses in late spring or early summer. For fescue, fall timing gives new seed warm soil for germination and a full cool season to establish before the next summer.
- Late summer: keep watering consistently so the soil is not bone-dry going into aeration.
- Mid-September to October: aerate, overseed and apply starter fertilizer on fescue lawns.
- Next three to four weeks: water lightly and often until seedlings are up, then gradually water deeper and less often.
- Late fall: first mows of the new grass at a high setting, followed by the main fall feeding.
Bermuda and St. Augustine lawns are aerated around May or June instead, while they are growing quickly and can recover from the disruption. Our Santa Clarita lawn care calendar shows how aeration fits with the rest of the year.
Watering new seed on clay
New seed has to stay moist at the surface until it sprouts, and on clay that means short, frequent cycles instead of one long soak. A long run puddles on top and floats seed into the low spots, where it comes up in clumps. Two or three brief cycles a day keep the top layer damp without runoff. Once the seedlings are up and have been mowed, the schedule shifts back toward deeper, less frequent watering that pushes roots down before summer.
Getting the most out of an aeration visit
Water the lawn a day or two before we arrive. Moist clay lets the tines go deeper and pull clean cores, while dry clay barely lets them in. Mark anything we cannot see, such as invisible dog fencing, shallow low-voltage lighting lines or a buried drip line running across the lawn. We flag every sprinkler head we find, but you know your yard best.
After an overseeding, hold off on weed preventer, since it stops grass seed as well as weeds. We plan around that inside our fertilization and weed control program. For help choosing a seed, our guide to the best grass for Santa Clarita compares the options. We aerate across the valley, including the hot inland lawns of Canyon Country. Starting prices for aeration alone and for aeration with overseeding are on the pricing page.
